ROOTS SHELTER OVERNIGHT SUPERVISOR- WORK STUDY OR UNPAID  INTERNSHIP- **SPRING QUARTER 2008**

This position consists of one or two 8pm-8:30am shifts per week (and you do get to sleep!) and two 1.5 hour staff meetings per month (total hours flexible). 

DUTIES

Help oversee shelter set-up, delegate tasks to volunteers, complete intake paperwork with new guests, provide back-up support to Shelter Manager/Program Coordinator by enforcing rules, interacting with guests, and providing guidance to volunteers, act as lead staff person throughout the night and morning.

REQUIREMENTS

* 18 years or older

* Excellent communication skills

* Self-motivated

PREFERENCES

* Experience with homeless and/or young adult populations

* Related field of study

* Supervisory experience

This is a great opportunity for people pursuing human services or social work degrees. Also, great volunteer experience for folks planning to apply to Med school. It is perfect for students who like to study during the night!

UW students can walk across the street to school after their shift :)

THE ORGANIZATION
Rising Out of the Shadows (ROOTS), a regionally recognized nonprofit organization providing critical services and advocacy for homeless young adults and other low-income persons, seeks a Program Director, a key new position that will be part of ROOTS’ senior leadership.

ROOTS currently operates two direct services programs: the Friday Feast meal program, recognized by Real Change as “the best of all soup kitchens,” serving over 8000 meals per year to all ages, and the ROOTS Young Adult Shelter, the only emergency shelter in Seattle specifically serving homeless persons between the ages of 18 and 25.  We offer these services in an atmosphere of welcoming hospitality.  The shelter operates 365 days a year, employing a small paid staff and large volunteer base.


QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES

The Program Director will supervise ROOTS program staff and volunteers, ensure outstanding services to our guests, and effectively coordinate with other service agencies in the community to develop and support a comprehensive network of care.

  • Minimum of three years professional experience providing services for homeless youth and/or adults, or other marginalized populations
  • Minimum BA or BS Degree required; Master Degree in Nonprofit Management, Social Work or related field preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence in management and supervision
  • Excellent verbal, writing, editing, and interpersonal skills, exceptional attention to detail
  • Seeks and readily incorporates direct feedback to ensure continuous improvement
  • Strong commitment to ROOTS’ mission

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Implementation and Evaluation

The Program Director is responsible for ROOTS direct service programs. This includes developing and directing programs in accordance with relevant federal/state/local guidelines and regulations. 

 

The Program Director will be present in ROOTS direct service programs on a regular basis.

 

The Program Director will oversee data management system(s) for all aspects of ROOTS programs, and ensure the timely completion of necessary forms, reports, etc. for submission to the ROOTS Board, service partners and funders as appropriate.

 

The Program Director will develop and maintain a program evaluation strategy and measurement of program effectiveness including guest feedback.

 

The Program Director will oversee facilities and be the liaison with University Temple Building Supervisor in ensuring smooth operation of program space, repairs and maintenance

 

Staff and Volunteer Management

The Program Director is responsible for hiring, training and mentoring program staff and volunteers  (including work study and national service workers), and developing/implementing a sustainable staffing plan.  Duties include regular supervisory meetings, wage/salary administration, and performance appraisals.   The Program Director will strive to create a compassionate but disciplined environment in the workplace.

 

The Program Director will research desirable professional development and team building opportunities for staff and volunteers and make recommendations to the Board.

 

Execution of Strategic Growth Objectives

The Program Director must have exceptional leadership, organizational, and management skills and experience.  His/her primary responsibility is to enable the program to achieve its operating objectives within the framework of the organization’s mission.

 

The Program Director will prepare a monthly programs report for the Board of Directors and will attend the monthly board meeting to participate in ongoing organizational conversations.

 

The Program Director will represent program needs and assist with preparing annual budget for ROOTS Board approval.

 

Community Engagement

Represent ROOTS in the broader community and with service partners and funders, and be effective as a facilitator of collaborative development.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY
The Program Director will adhere to ROOTS Policies and Procedures and manage ROOTS programs within Board approved annual budget limitations.  The Programs Director reports to the Executive Director and will frequently interact with the Board.
