Q.  When is orientation?

A.  Orientation occurs twice a month on a weeknight from 6 to 7PM – please contact us to verify the specific day and time.  Please bring a copy of the volunteer application (Click on “Volunteers” and then on “Opportunities” to download the form) with you to orientation along with photo ID.  If you have a Food Handler’s Permit or CPR/First Aid Certification, please bring a copy of that, as well.

Q.  Where is the shelter located?

A.  ROOTS is located in the U District in the basement of the University Temple United Methodist Church at 1415 NE 43rd Street.  The entrance to the shelter is in the alley on the west side of the church – look for a set of concrete steps near the southwest end of the building leading up to two blue double doors.

Q. Is there an age requirement?

A. Shelter volunteers and overnight volunteers all have to be 18 years old.  Breakfast volunteers may bring minors as long as they are directly supervised.

Q. Is there a minimum time commitment to volunteer?

A. In order to help create a sense of community and stability for the young people we serve, we ask that all volunteers commit to at least one shift a month for a period of four months.

Q. Can I volunteer to satisfy court ordered community service?

A.  Yes unless you have been charged or convicted of crimes against a person. Please note that you must fulfill all the normal volunteer requirements including the minimum time commitment.

Q. Is there any special training or classes that have to be completed to volunteer at ROOTS?

A. Yes.  ROOTS requires that you attend one of our FREE conflict de-escalation trainings before becoming an overnight volunteer or engaging in some of the more advanced evening duties.  If you are interested in signing up for our next course, please email volunteer@rootsinfo.org for more information.

Q. How do I start volunteering?

A.  Attend one of our weekly orientations or email us at volunteer@rootsinfo.org to set up an alternate orientation time.

Q. Where do I mail my volunteer application?

A. Snail mail is often unreliable, and we prefer that you bring your application in with you to orientation, or email us an electronic copy. Our address can also be found below:
