When is orientation?
Orientation usually occurs twice a month on the first Thursday and third Wednesday of each month (excluding holidays) from 6pm-7:30pm in the shelter location. Please check our calendar, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call to verify orientation dates. Please fill out a volunteer application online and bring a photo ID to the orientation. If you have a Food Handler’s Permit or CPR/First Aid Certification, please bring a copy of that, as well.
Where is the shelter located?
ROOTS is located in the U-District in the basement of the University Temple United Methodist Church at 1415 NE 43rd Street. Click here for map. The entrance to the shelter is in the alley on the west side of the church – look for a set of concrete steps near the southwest end of the building leading up to two blue double doors. Doors open 15 minutes before orientation begins.
Is there an age requirement?
Shelter volunteers and overnight volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Breakfast and Dinner Prep volunteers may bring minors as long as they are directly supervised.
Is there a minimum time commitment to volunteer?
In order to help create a sense of community and stability for the young people we serve, we ask that all volunteers commit to a minimum of one shift per week for a minimum of six months. This is not a hard and fast requirement, but it’s heavily encouraged.
Can I volunteer to satisfy court ordered community service?
Yes – unless you have been charged or convicted of crimes against a person. Please note that you must fulfill all the normal volunteer requirements including the minimum time commitment. If you are looking for 24 hours or less of court mandated service you are encouraged to volunteer with our Friday Feast program. For commitments exceeding 24 hours you may fill out a volunteer application to serve within our shelter.
Is there any special training or classes that have to be completed to volunteer at ROOTS?
Yes. ROOTS requires that all volunteers complete our required Anti-Oppression 101, Conflict Response and ROPES trainings within the first 3-months of volunteering. These trainings are offered monthly. Please email email@example.com to learn more information about each of these trainings and check out our calendar to see when they are coming up.
How do I start volunteering?
If you are interested in volunteering in shelter: attend one of our orientations and email firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule a shift. If you are interested in admin or group opportunities email us at email@example.com to set up an alternate orientation time.
Can I fill out an application at Orientation?
Yes! We will have opportunities to fill out the application at orientation. However, we strongly prefer for you to fill out the application online here.
